Guidance and tips to help you support your child's musical journey

Supporting Practice at Home

The most important thing you can do as a parent is create a positive environment for practice. This does not mean standing over your child while they play — it means showing interest, offering encouragement, and helping establish a regular routine. Even five minutes of focused daily practice is more effective than a long session once a week. Jordan provides specific practice tasks after every lesson, so your child always knows what to work on.

Choosing an Instrument

If your child is starting piano lessons, they will need access to a piano or keyboard at home. A full-size digital piano with weighted keys is the ideal starting point and represents good value without the commitment of an acoustic instrument. Jordan is happy to offer advice on what to look for and can recommend suitable models at various price points. For singing students, no special equipment is needed beyond a quiet space to practise.

When to Start Exams

There is no rush to enter examinations. Jordan will advise when your child is ready, and exams are always optional. Many students benefit from the focus and sense of achievement that working towards a grade provides, but it is equally valid to enjoy lessons without any formal assessment. When the time is right, Jordan will discuss the options with you and ensure your child is thoroughly prepared before entering.

What Progress Looks Like

Progress in music is not always linear, and it can sometimes be hard to notice day by day. Over the course of a term, however, the changes are usually very clear — new pieces learned, improved technique, growing confidence, and a deeper understanding of music. Jordan provides regular feedback on progress and will flag any concerns early so they can be addressed together. Celebrate the small victories along the way; they all add up.

Communication with Jordan

Open communication between parents and teacher is essential. Jordan welcomes questions and is happy to discuss your child's progress, practice habits, or any concerns at any time. Messages can be sent via email or text, and Jordan aims to respond promptly. If a longer conversation would be helpful, a brief chat before or after a lesson can easily be arranged. You are always kept informed about what your child is working on and where they are heading next.
