How Lessons Run
Everything you need to know about your music lessons in Telford
Weekly Lesson Structure
Lessons take place weekly during term time and follow a structured yet flexible format. Each session is tailored to the individual student, but typically includes a warm-up, work on current pieces or technical exercises, introduction of new material, and a review of what to practise before the next lesson. Lessons are available in 30-minute and 60-minute formats depending on age, level, and preference.
Term Dates and Holidays
McFarlane Music broadly follows the Telford and Wrekin school term dates, with lessons running across three terms per year. A full schedule of term dates is provided at the start of each academic year. There are no lessons during school holidays, half-term breaks, or bank holidays unless otherwise arranged. Any changes to the schedule are communicated well in advance.
What to Bring
Students should bring their music books and any materials provided by Jordan to each lesson. A practice notebook or folder is recommended for keeping track of weekly goals and feedback. For piano students, access to a piano or keyboard at home is essential for making progress between lessons.
Practice Expectations
Regular practice between lessons is the single most important factor in making progress. Jordan provides clear, manageable practice tasks each week, tailored to the student's level and available time. Young beginners might be asked to practise for 10 to 15 minutes a day, while more advanced students will benefit from longer and more focused sessions. Quality always matters more than quantity.
Exam Entry Process
For students working towards ABRSM or LCM graded examinations, Jordan manages the exam entry process and will advise when a student is ready to sit an exam. Exam fees are payable by the student or parent and are separate from lesson fees. Jordan provides guidance on exam dates, venues, and what to expect on the day, ensuring the experience is as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Cancellation Policy
If you need to cancel a lesson, please provide at least 24 hours notice. Lessons cancelled with adequate notice can usually be rearranged within the same term where scheduling allows. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, or missed without contact, are charged at the full rate. In the event that Jordan needs to cancel a lesson, a replacement lesson or credit will always be offered.
